HUUmanist Discussion-Group
Time: 9:00am - 10:00am
Location: Parish House
Sunday June 11: Ed Stone will make a presentation on the topic "Protagoras: A Modern Humanist's Appreciation," followed by moderated discussion. There is NO new handout.

Our discussion style is to encourage deep explorations, and we promote this by a longer meeting time and by a second week of discussion. The moderator will open discussion with introductions and note those who raise their hands to speak. Moderator will intercede to limit long exchanges, unreasonably long waiting times, and discursions too far from the topic, but discussants should be patient as they may not be recognized immediately or in order.

Protagoras' statement that 'man is the measure of all things' is at the heart of Humanism and also provokes the greatest criticism of Humanism. Ed's presentation will be in three parts. First he will sketch what little is known of Protagoras and give some context that may help interpret him.

Second, he will defuse Plato's portrayal of him as a pernicious sort of relativist.

Third, he will give a personal account of one man's modern Humanist outlook, offering a non-relativist interpretation of the man-measure statement that justifies its place as a Humanist credo.

By-laws Forums
Time: 11:00am
May 28 and June 11

As the recent and significant growth-and-strategicplanning process our church undertook continued, it became apparent to the Board of Trustees that the church
needed to update its by-laws with both substantive and non-substantive changes. The Board has prepared a set of revisions it will ask the congregation to vote on at our
Parish Meeting on June 18.

In preparation, the Board will host two forums to describe and discuss the proposed changes. The first, on May 28, will take place between the services and the
second, on June 11, will be after the 10:00 a.m. service.

The Board’s goal is to ensure that the congregation has ample opportunity to discuss the proposed changes in advance so we can efficiently propose and vote on the amended By-laws during the Parish Meeting.

Adult Forum - Questions of Value
Time: 11:15am - 12:15pm
Location: Library
June 11: "Lives to Envy, Lives to Admire"

Our lives are filled with everyday questions of fact and finance. Professor Patrick Grim says the really fundamental questions of our lives are questions neither of fact nor finance, but of value. This series is a video-lecture course for anyone who has ever felt the tug of such questions and wants to fine-tune the ability to see how deeper questions of ethics and values apply to the choices that make up our lives. The course is designed to open debate and facilitate reflective thought.

Dr. Grim is professor of Philosophy at the University of New York, Stony Brook.

Social Action Issues Forum
Time: 11:15am - 12:15pm
Location: Raible Chapel
Our next Social Action issues forum, this Sunday (June 11) from 11:15 to 12:15 in Raible Chapel. Our speaker is Liz Branch, a board member of the Dallas Peace Center. She will discuss actions we can take in response to Darfur, Iraq and other current crises.

Issues Forums occur on the second Sunday of each month, and provide an opportunity to hear from and speak with leading experts and activists. Based on the input you have provided, future forums will include Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, local Dallas issues, the environment, and other urgent issues.

Spiritual Conversations
Time: 11:15am - 12:15pm
Location: Raible Chapel
June 11: No Spiritual Conversation-Social Action Issues Forum meets instead
June 18: No Spiritual Conversation - Please attend the Parish Meeting in the Sanctuary

Spiritual Conversations meets weekly except on the second Sunday of the month. Each session opens with a reading, often a poem, and continues with a period of silent reflection.

Conversation begins slowly as we share our reflections on the reading and the spiritual experience it inspires. Everyone is welcome to join us for this time of poetry, meditation, and spiritual conversation. Copies of the week’s reading are provided.
