Power Over People

This video lecture series taught by Professor Dennis Dalton from Barnard College/Columbia University explores political systems and how they attend to the relationship between the individual and society and address the essential and enduring questions about the nature of “good society.” The series will seek out the source and function of legitimate political authority and evaluate the values reflected by political institutions. It is an in-depth survey of political thought that has shaped modern societies beginning with ancient Hindu and Greek philosophies and moving through Rousseau, Marx, Freud, Thoreau, Dostoyevsky, Hitler, and Gandhi.
