Being functionally illiterate is a major problem for over 25% of the adult population. LIFT provides adult literacy classes. Volunteers receive training to conduct the classes. No prior teaching experience is necessary. Volunteer for as little as two hours per week. Founded by a covenant of 45 North Dallas congregations, including First Unitarian, NDSM is dedicated to serving the working poor and elderly through a variety of services including emergency assistance (utilities, rent, transportation, documentation), a food pantry, a used clothing closet, employment counseling, tax preparation services, eyeglasses, English as a second language classes, a dental clinic, a medical clinic for acute minor illness, vaccinations, well women's health care, dermatology and podiatry services.
