What to Expect at Church
Things you may want to know for your first visit.
What are Sunday services like? Our Sunday worship services at First Church provide an open environment for individuals to deepen their spirituality through music, singing of hymns, readings, thought-provoking sermons, prayer and silence, in a space designed to give the feeling of a clearing in the forest. At each service the lighting of a chalice draws us to eternal truths beyond particular forms and rituals and symbols. Services may occasionally include special ceremonies for youth, new members, or holiday observances.
Where do I park? We have ample parking near the church. Also, Highland Park Village (at Preston & Mockingbird) offers their parking lot to us during Sunday morning church services.
What should my children and I wear to this church? Some people dress up and some many people dress casually. We do not have a “dress code.” You are welcome to wear whatever feels comfortable to you.
Is there child care/Sunday school during church? Free child care is available for younger children during services. All year long there are religious education classes on Sundays for children and youths. For more information about the curriculm, click HERE.
If my child doesn't separate well, can my child stay with me during the service? Your child is always welcome to stay with you during the worship service. Please be considerate of others if your child becomes restless. Are all people welcome in this congregation? We strive to respect and welcome all people of all faiths, ethnicities, and orientations.
Are there people in the congregation who hold diverse beliefs? Yes. We welcome people of all religious traditions and beliefs, including atheists. Unitarian Universalists affirm a diversity of religious ideas and support spiritual development guided by freedom, reason, and conscience.
How do I meet other people? How do I get involved? Attend a service. You will be greeted at the door and can learn about small group opportunities for education and spiritual growth. Stay for coffee and conversation in Channing Hall following the service. Give some thought to whether you prefer to meet new people in social- or work-related activities; we offer plenty of both options. For example, you can enroll in an adult religious education class or join any number of committees to work on specific projects that match your skills/interests. For more information, contact any member of the Membership Committee.
How do I get to the church? The First Unitarian Church of Dallas is located at 4015 Normandy Drive in Dallas, TX (near Mockingbird and Preston). Click HERE for a map and/or driving directions from your location.
What do I do if I have other questions?
If you introduce yourself to the greeter at the Visitors' Table or one of the ushers handing out programs, they can help answer any questions you may have. Coffee hour in Channing Hall after each service is also a great time to ask questions and find more information. You may always Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the church office at 214-528-3990.
We hope to See you this Sunday!
