Small Group Ministry
What is a Circle?
A Circle is a group of 6-14 people (including two trained facilitators) that meet monthly at the church or in a member’s home to reflect on spiritual or religious topics. Circles promote spiritual growth through a sharing and listening process, while helping participants build connections within the larger church community.
Joining a Circle involves a covenant (group promise) to attend consistently for a one year period and to the use of a particular process for sharing in the Circle. Deep listening, as practiced in Circles, is a way of focusing intently on what another person is saying without interruption or simultaneously formulating a response. It gives an individual the opportunity to speak without interruption or comment.
In addition to monthly meetings, Circle participants care for one another, plan and carry out a service project, and engage with the church-wide spiritual practices.
A Circle is a way to…
- Deepen our spirituality through a shared practice
- Share our thoughts on life’s big questions
- Connect across differences
- Be engaged, included, and heard in a safe, nurturing environment
- Bring together new and long-time members of our community
- Deepen our practice of shared UU principles
- Practice service from within a small community
- Develop connections with the rest of the congregation
