The author Ursula LeGuin wrote, “It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” Love First: Deep in the Heart of Dallas is our church’s plan for our future. It includes a series of exciting initiatives that we are working toward, and which will move us in the direction of an expanded mission and reach. While we have our eyes set on a bright future, the journey to get there matters. That journey involves building relationships and community, one conversation at a time.
There is a growing team of church members who have volunteered, over the next few months, to initiate conversations with every single family in the church. Every. Single. One. That includes YOU! These conversations are an opportunity to sit down one-on-one to connect, get to know each other, share what you love about the church and what’s important to you, and envision how you can be part of our shared future.
Some of my favorite moments in ministry over the past few months have occurred during these visits. It’s an honor to be able to visit with you, to hear about your lives and why you keep showing up and supporting this church. I’ve visited with some of you I know well, and others with whom I’d never had an extended conversation. I’ve visited with long-time members and some who’ve been here just a couple years. I’ve had the joy of looking through family photo albums and seeing photos of your grandchildren. I’ve sat at your computers and showed you the digital outreach we’re already doing, and how you can take advantage of these resources. I’ve eaten homemade lasagna, soup, and apple cake. I’ve helped connect you with opportunities now to deepen your involvement in the church. And I’ve heard how you’ve made the church what it is today. I’ve come away from these visits with a deep sense of gratitude for this church and you who make it what it is, and with a lot of hope for our future.
This is the journey – building beloved community here and now, as we work together to spread our message and deepen our roots in the heart of Dallas. When you get the call from a fellow church member inviting you into conversation, I hope you will say “yes!” We need each and every one of you to help make the vision of Love First: Deep in the Heart of Dallas a reality.
With a grateful heart,
