“But the time has come… in the history of Dallas, when a broad and liberal Christianity should be declared here. Many souls are hungering and thirsting for religious knowledge, truth and righteousness, to whom the old dogmas, doctrines and creeds appear outgrown. These persons are at sea without chart or compass, and many are making shipwreck of their religious natures. The old creeds seem to them unworthy of the character of God, the nature of man, and of the highest conception of human duty and destiny…. hence we need a liberal platform which does no violence to religion but which, while it is perfectly rational, is, at the same time, expressive of the highest conception of a life of spirituality.”

Rev. Daniel Christian Limbaugh
Founded First Unitarian Church of Dallas in 1899

“…as we are recognizing a certain kind of institutional maturity, somehow it seems that we could put our spirit, our passion, our hope, our best thinking, our power, and our collective wisdom to the larger purposes of our church, and do thoughtful planning.”

Dr. Laurel Hallman
Senior Minister, First Unitarian Church of Dallas
Excerpted from April 25, 2004 Sermon

Our vision. Our goals. Our challenge. Our roadmap.

That’s what Chart and Compass 2010 is.

The process of articulating our goals began in 2003. By the end of 2005, after scores of church members dedicated their talents and time, we have Chart and Compass 2010, our five-year implementation plan. It builds on our strengths and seizes on opportunities to synthesize our collective and prioritized goals. It rededicates us to the value of inclusive, supportive community. It reclaims our unique contribution to public life. It cannot predict every turn or impediment, but does indicate our intentions and helps move us boldly into the years ahead.

2007 Year-End Update

We have prepared a 2007 year-end update on Chart and Compass 2010 progress to give you the opportunity to compare what we said we would do with what we have done so far.  You can download it as a PDF file here.

To date our process has been inclusive, careful, enlightening, member/volunteer driven, and sometimes slower than we might wish, or have fully anticipated.  In many very real ways we are experiencing together the interconnected web of our own community.  No one thing that we hope to accomplish moves forward or requires pause without somehow impacting the momentum or direction of another. The many aspects of our best intentions are ultimately all advancing together, informed by the unfolding realities we encounter along the way and propelled by our shared faith.  This is a very exciting and very critical time in the history of our church, and there is much yet to do!  We welcome your continued interest, support and participation.

Thank you.
